In 1815, Charles Pumpelly built the original home on this property, where he lived until 1841. Years later, the house was transformed into The Owego Female Seminary—a boarding and day school for young women.
In 1863, the remarkable Belva Lockwood purchased the property and served as Principal of the Seminary until 1865. After leaving Owego, she went on to break barriers as the first woman admitted to the Bar in Washington, D.C., the first woman to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court, and one of the first women to run for President of the United States—in both 1884 and 1888.
After Belva moved to Washington, part of the original structure was dismantled and relocated to nearby 188 Front Street to serve as a carriage house. In 1878, the current home was built by Jefferson Dwelle and remains one of the finest examples of High Victorian architecture in the region. Over the years, the property was home to the Fraternal Order of Eagles and later served as a private residence.
In 2016, the house began a new chapter as it underwent renovations to become the Belva Lockwood Inn.
We, Brie and Matt Woods, discovered the Inn online in 2022 and were immediately drawn to Belva’s incredible story. We took a weekend trip to a village we had never heard of, where we knew no one—and fell instantly in love. The charm of the home, the legacy of Belva, and the warm, welcoming spirit of Owego captured our hearts. We knew this was where we were meant to be, and we’re so glad we made the leap.
Today, we’re proud to share this historic space with you. Whether you’re here to relax, explore, or learn more about Belva Lockwood, we hope you feel the same inspiration and joy that brought us here. Welcome to Owego—artsy, supportive, fun, and full of heart

Belva Lockwood wasn’t just a pioneer for women’s rights, she was a champion for equal rights for all. She fought for justice in an era when the concept was far from popular, and her spirit continues to inspire us today.
Here are some of her accomplishments:
Belva Lockwood shattered barriers by becoming the first woman admitted to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. And to make her story even more impressive, she won her first case!
Long before women had the right to vote, Belva Lockwood defied expectations by running for President of the United States in both 1884 and 1888. Her campaigns, though unsuccessful in terms of winning the office, were a powerful statement about equality and possibility.
Belva recognized the injustice of unequal pay for equal work, regardless of gender. She fought for fair compensation, laying the groundwork for progress in this area.
Over a century later, Belva Lockwood’s fight for equality continues. Her legacy is one of courage, perseverance, and a commitment to justice. We honor her by continuing the fight for a more just world, and by channeling her unwavering spirit.
We’re thrilled to join forces with the Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways on a special adventure! Together, we’re launching the Belva Lockwood Fun Patch program, designed to inspire future leaders by exploring the remarkable life of lawyer, politician, and social reformer Belva Lockwood.
